Why You Show Up on Google Maps but Not in Normal Search Results
It is one of the most common things a local business owner notices, and one of the most confusing. Search for what you do and your name and you are right there in the map. Scroll past it to the ordinary results underneath and you have vanished.
Nothing is broken. You are looking at two different systems that happen to sit on the same page, and they are ranking two different things.
The map and the blue links are not the same competition
The map results, the three businesses shown with pins and star ratings, come from Google Business Profiles. Google is ranking businesses there: your profile, how close you are to whoever is searching, your reviews, your categories.
The ordinary results underneath come from the web. Google is ranking pages there, not businesses. It is asking which page best answers this search, and your business only competes if you have a page that does.
So showing up in one and not the other is not a glitch. It usually means your Google Business Profile is doing its job and your website is not in the race at all.
Why the profile works when the website does not
A Google Business Profile is a fixed set of boxes. Fill them in properly, pick the right categories, collect some reviews, and you are a legitimate candidate for the map. It is a form, and forms are easy to complete.
A website has to earn the blue links a different way, by having a page genuinely about the thing someone searched for. That is why a business with a good profile and a one-page website full of "welcome to our site" often appears in the map and nowhere else. There is no page on it about the actual service, so there is nothing for Google to rank.
Proximity matters in the map too, and it does not below. If someone is standing near you, that alone can put you in the map. It will never put you in the organic results.
The question to ask about your own site
Take the exact phrase someone would type. Not the words you use internally, the words a customer uses. "Emergency electrician Harrogate", not "domestic electrical solutions".
Now ask: is there a page on my website that is genuinely about that? Not a mention of it in a list on the homepage. A page.
For most small business websites, the honest answer is no for nearly everything they do. Six services and one page describing them all is one page competing for six searches, and it usually loses all of them.
The reverse problem, which is also common
Some businesses have the opposite: they turn up in the ordinary results but never in the map. That is almost always a Google Business Profile issue rather than a website one.
Usually the profile is incomplete, in the wrong category, missing the service area, or has no reviews to speak of. Sometimes it has simply never been claimed. None of that is fixed by anything on your website, which is why website work alone can leave the map untouched.
The two need dealing with separately, because they fail separately.
What actually closes the gap
Give each real service its own page, written around what a customer would type rather than trade language, with genuine detail rather than a paragraph. If you serve several towns, the same applies to the places worth having, though a page per village with the name swapped is treated as spam and does more harm than good.
Keep the profile doing what it already does well: complete, correctly categorised, with reviews coming in and getting replies.
Then be patient with it. Local SEO work typically takes 3 to 6 months to show meaningful ranking change, less in a quiet area and more in a competitive one. Anyone promising next week is guessing.
The short version
The map is ranking your business. The results underneath are ranking your pages. If you are in one and not the other, you now know which half of the work has been done and which has not.
Most local businesses are stronger on the profile than the website, because the profile is the bit that is easy to finish.
