Do You Still Need a Website If You Already Have a Facebook Page?

Plenty of small businesses run entirely off a Facebook page or Instagram profile, and for a while that is enough. Then someone asks why they cannot find you on Google, or a competitor with a proper website starts showing up above you. This is the honest answer to whether you still need a website once you already have a social page.

Short version: a social page and a website do different jobs. Once you understand what each one is actually for, the decision gets a lot easier.

Why this question comes up

Setting up a Facebook page takes minutes, costs nothing, and puts you in front of people who already follow local pages in your area. For a lot of businesses that is where they started, and it worked well enough that a website never felt urgent.

The problem shows up later: a customer searches "plumber near me" or "dog groomer in [town]" on Google, not Facebook, and a page with no website behind it is much harder for Google to rank confidently.

What a Facebook page cannot do

A Facebook or Instagram page is not built to rank in Google search the way a real website is. It can appear, but you are competing on a platform's terms, not your own, and you have far less control over what people see first.

It also depends on people already being on that platform. Plenty of potential customers, especially anyone searching directly on Google rather than browsing social media, will never see it at all.

You do not own it either. The account can be restricted, the algorithm can bury your posts, and you are always one policy change away from losing reach you built up for free.

What a Facebook page still does well

To be fair to it: a social page is genuinely good for quick updates, photos of recent work, and talking directly with an audience that already follows you. None of that needs to go away.

It is also a good place to build early trust through likes, comments, and reviews before a customer has decided to get in touch properly.

What a website adds on top

A website gives you a page that is entirely yours, built to be found by people who are actively searching for what you do, not just people who already follow you.

It also does the credibility job. A visitor lands, sees what you do, your area, your reviews, and a clear way to get in touch, without having to scroll through a feed of unrelated posts to find it. For anyone comparing you to a competitor with a proper site, that difference is obvious immediately.

Signs it is time to add one

You are getting enquiries through Facebook Messenger and having to explain the same basic information every time. A website answers those questions before anyone has to ask.

A competitor with a similar-sized business is showing up above you on Google. That usually means they have a website with proper SEO foundations and you do not, yet.

You want people to be able to book, quote, or contact you without needing a Facebook account of their own.

You do not need to choose one or the other

The two work best together: keep posting on Facebook, and link it from a website that does the finding-and-trusting job Facebook cannot. You do not need to rebuild everything to start, either. A single well-built page covering what you do, your area, and how to contact you is enough to close the gap.

That is exactly what our Starter plan is for: one page, live fast, from £20 a month, with hosting and updates handled so it is one less thing to manage alongside your social pages.
